Paper Wasp Art Background:
Paper wasps collect natural materials such as plant and wood fibers, combining them with their own saliva to create structurally strong yet delicate papier-mâché-esque nests. The paper wasp’s process is much like my own – taking elements of nature which I am drawn to and mixing them through personal processes which establish structure, well-being, and creative joy.
Paper wasps fueled my most intense and fulfilling artistic undertaking to date during my college senior studio art capstone in 2020. Seeking to intertwine my love of making papercut art with ceramic sculpting, I took inspiration from paper wasps’ use of plant fibers to strengthen their nests by combining paper pulp and clay to create durable paperclay, a medium which is strengthened by tree fibers and allows one to cut into clay in delicate patterns much like papercuttings. The name Paper Wasp Art is a commitment to continued creativity through exploration of different mediums and elements of nature.
